Standards and ideals of evaluating America's Junior Miss participants are universal, based on distinguishing qualities and characteristics which should be incorporated in the total young woman. The basis of selection and the format emphasize excellence in scholarship, fitness, creativity, and in human relations. Each category receives the following percentage points within the preliminary balloting:

Scholastic Achievement 20%
A panel of qualified educators review and rate transcripts of grades and scores of scholastic tests and college entrance examinations.

Judges Interview 25%
In a discussion session with each participant, the panel looks for perception, a sense of values, clarity of expression, concern and ability in human relations.

Creative & Performing Arts 25%
This category is evaluated on originality, technical ability, appropriateness of selection and costume, and stage presence during performance. Performances must be no longer than 90 seconds.

Fitness 15%
Coordination, stamina, agility, posture, and carriage are considered in an overall evaluation of health and physical well-being.

Self-Expression15%
This category is evaluated on the young woman's ability to display grace under pressure, her ability to communicate, her confidence, naturalness in carriage, posture, and poise.
