and ideals of evaluating America's Junior Miss participants
are universal, based on distinguishing qualities and characteristics
which should be incorporated in the total young woman. The
basis of selection and the format emphasize excellence in
scholarship, fitness, creativity, and in human relations.
Each category receives the following percentage points within
the preliminary balloting:
Scholastic Achievement
20%
A panel of qualified educators review and rate transcripts
of grades and scores of scholastic tests and college entrance
examinations.
Judges Interview 25%
In a discussion session with each participant, the panel
looks for perception, a sense of values, clarity of expression,
concern and ability in human relations.
Creative & Performing
Arts 25%
This category is evaluated on originality, technical ability,
appropriateness of selection and costume, and stage presence
during performance. Performances must be no longer than
90 seconds.
Fitness 15%
Coordination, stamina, agility, posture, and carriage are
considered in an overall evaluation of health and physical
well-being.
Self-Expression15%
This category is evaluated on the young woman's ability
to display grace under pressure, her ability to communicate,
her confidence, naturalness in carriage, posture, and poise.
