About Lawrence County's Junior Miss Program

The America's Junior Miss program is a nationwide scholarship program that has successfully opened the door of opportunity for young women since its beginning in 1958. It is the oldest and largest scholarship program for high school seniors in the United States. It is conducted on the local, state, and national levels allowing thousands of outstanding young women to participate each year and compete for the millions of dollars available in scholarships to further their education.

Each of the fifty states sends a representative to the National Finals which are held each year in Mobile, Alabama. The winner of the National Finals becomes America's Junior Miss, a representative for a program that seeks to recognize, reward, and encourage excellence among young people in today's society by focusing on the achievements of oustanding high school senior girls. The young women who participate are presented with the chance to receive scholarships to help them pursue their educational goals at the college or university of their choice.

Each year more than 200 colleges and universities across the nation contribute scholarships, and each state winner is guaranteed a full four-year scholarship including room, board, tuition, and fees. The America's Junior Miss program offers more than $34 million in scholarships and awards to the participants at local, state, and national levels each year. A $50,000 scholarship sponsored by HealthSouth, Inc. is presented to the national winner.

The America's Junior Miss program has established a unique system on which each of the participants in the program are evaluated. Much of the evaluation is based on the individual's service to others and her level of personal development–morally, academically, and physically. Each contestant is evaluated in the areas of scholastic achievement, fitness, presence & composure, creative & performing arts, and a judges interview in which perception, sense of values, eloquence, and abilities in human relations are considered. The young women are honored and encouraged to continue this path of excellence by completing their college education and assuming roles of leadership and responsibilities in their communities and in their professions, and by setting an example that other young women should be encouraged to follow.

The America's Junior Miss program is a non-profit organization governed by a board of 28 civic, business, and professional leaders both locally and nationally. The board issues franchises to organizations in all 50 states to conduct the state programs. The state franchise holders, in turn issue franchises to civic and service groups, women's clubs, schools, and other community organizations to conduct the local programs. The program is sponsored nationally by an array of corporate sponsors and receives additional support from the city of Mobile, Mobile County, and the state of Alabama.
